dialect o language

I have a comment here from Kristian who has corrected me calling Cebuano a dialect. I admit I am not a linguist at all. If I am wrong I am sorry. But I would just like to comment on the comment to clear things.

First I did not mention in this blog at all (kung naa man ingna ko asa) that Cebuano is a dialect of the Tagalog language. Wala pud nako gisulat diri sa blog nga ang Cebuano mas lower from Tagalog nor any other ethnic languages or dialects sa pinas.

Ang akong pagsabot when I wrote dialect is that the visayan dialects comes from the Pilipino or Filipino language which is so confusing to really pin point and identify. problema na ninyo na kung unsa na nga main language. I don't want to be misunderstood and I don't want to be accused of anything. I am a pinoy and to me this regionalistic attitude we have is not doing any good to our country at all. Whether Cebuano is a dialect or language is not much to be a bother to me. What is important is that we are all pinoys.

The reason why Cebuano is frequently referred to as a dialect is more political than academic. If it is a lack of uniformity of the language that reduces it to a dialect status, then English and its different manifestations in England, Australia, South Africa, and the US can no longer be called a language. Or is it the closeness of a language to another that putsd it in an inferior taxonomic status? In that case, the Latin group of languages most certainly must be considered dialects. A knowledge of Spanish makes Italian and Portuguese quite intelligible, especially in written form. Or, perhaps, it is the lack of a uniform standard of writing of Cebuano that makes it an "illegitimate" language? Well, the problem with Cebuano writing stems from colonial attempts at "spaniardizing" it, rather than a defect in the language itself. Had Cebuano writing been developed by native speakers, it is no doubt that the "o vs. u" and "e vs. i" confusion in writing would have been settled by adopting a single letter to represent both Cebuano-equivalent sounds.

So why is it that some cling to the idea that Cebuano is a dialect? Probably
1) For political reasons. More Filipinos are born speaking Cebuano than Tagalog, and yet it is the latter language that has been elected to be referred to as "Filipino". Recognizing Cebuano for what it is might raise legitimate, yet incendiary political questions.
2) Recognizing Cebuano as a language would yield to greater academic interest in it, and possibly open the door to Cebuano-based school instruction, whereas the current educational objective in the Philippines is to teach using the Tagalog and English media only.

Whatever the classification, Cebuano is an amazing language, and I feel privileged to learn and continue learning it.

Whatever the ignorants in manila, especially those in the media, are saying about the Cebuano language,I don't care at all because they are just ignorant not worth to waste time with. When Manilenyos speak tagalog they sound like very effeminate which most North Americans find it awkward to listen especially they have a chauvinist society. Manilenyos tend to speak as if their language is special and superior that they tend to exaggerate and speak so effeminately thus sound like babbling faggots.

i agree with the first two comments. it is both, a language AND a dialect, it just depends on how you define the terms. English, German and Dutch are all dialects of the same language but, at the same time, they are all languages in their own right. therefore, one term does not exclude the other. although you could argue that there is no mutual intelligibility between tagalog and bisaya/cebuano, you can't deny that they are related.
at any rate, what is important to note is that bisayans/cebuanos are just luckier than tagalogs because they (are forced to) know many different Philippine dialects/languages, whereas tagalogs typically only know one. the more langauges you speak, the more sets of eyes you see the world through. you should be proud, if anything, and not let yourself be intimidated by anyone. strive to be proficient in every language you learn, but also don't deny your identity, whether you are Filipino, American, both, or something else. or just simply Live and Let Live. ;-)
basta sa akin ang mga bisaya (maging Cebuano man or any other regional dialect of the south) ang pinakamalambing na pakinggan sa mga Philippine dialects. :-) unfortunately, wa ko kabalo.

reasons why i hate tagalog:
1. its not my language
2.it sounds gay
3.it has too much spanish words on it, making it less ethnic
4.very poor vocubulary compared to bisaya(sugbo)
5. tagalog people have always thought of themselves as superior to the bisaya, so i don't want to encourage it by speaking their langguage, i talk to them in english instead

reasons why i like bisaya(sugbo)
1. it is my my mother tounge
2. bisaya is more widely used in the phil.
3. there are bisaya in borneo
4. bisaya history and culture is more interesting(if only more people would know that)
5 there are more artifacts uncovered from the south than anywhere else in the philippines
6 i read william henry scott's book: barangay
7 bisaya has a more ethnic vocubulary
8 i find bisaya people friendlier and more humble.
9 bisaya is very intruiging, mysterious, and more masculine sounding and has a very distinct culture
10 bisaya have always remained united and resilient inspite of.........

padayon ug magkahiusa ta mga bisaya
